Listen everywhere

“Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track” (from Proverbs 3).

It’s really easy to miss God’s voice. As I go about my day, I get so caught up in the details of everything on my plate that I ignore what God is trying to tell me.

Here are a few ways I’ve tried – and often failed – to hear what God is telling me:

  • I see the morning beauty of light-green new growth in the spring. (I start thinking about the weeds I need to pull.)
  • A wise associate tells me to examine my skillset and focus on my strengths. (Pride gets in the way.)
  • I get frustrated by the responsibilities of caring for a friend who has basic needs that I am equipped to provide. (I forget about how they have a sweet and loving spirit that they share with all.)
  • I focus on my own interests in a conversation because what I want to say has such great relevance to what we are talking about. (I miss a gem of true value that the other is about to share.)

The Bible verse above is from The Message. if you watch this video about Eugene Peterson and his relationship with Bono, you can understand a little of Eugene’s perspective as he paraphrased that verse.

Paul Merrill writes here every first Friday of each month.
