We had a perfectly good conversation.
We were talking about Jesus washing feet. It is a wonderful story about sacrificing dignity for people who we know may not understand.
That’s what happened after Jesus washed the feet of the disciples.
He did exactly what the lowest level of household servant would do. He did it for people who would run away from him within hours. He did it for a person who would give him up to be killed. He did it for a person who would vehemently deny knowing him.
It was, I said, a very good conversation we were having. We were exploring what it would look like to do that kind of helping today. I’m pretty sure that it isn’t washing feet, for example. I think it might be like a pastor showing up at someone’s house with a toilet brush.
We were pretty thoughtful.
And then, as time was winding down on our conversation, I said “listen for how God might be pointing out someone who needs some help.” And then I asked that very same thing of God.
I went from that discussion into our church service. I was singing, minding my own business. And then I heard a trumpet. (Not some metaphoric trumpet. I heard an actual trumpet as part of the music.)
And suddenly I thought of an acquaintance.
This is a brother who has big struggles and not much delight. Except, I remembered, when he was talking about the trumpet.
There are good reasons his name shouldn’t have come to mind. There are reasons I shouldn’t have remembered that he likes the trumpet. There are reasons it makes no sense to contact him about trumpets.
Unfortunately, given my prayer, none of the reasons make sense.
Argh.
Know any really good trumpet recordings?
Matt Jones
i have several tapes, maybe some cds of trumpet recordings (tim zimmerman, chase, maynard, doc severinson) beautiful and energetic. my trumpet has slept in the basement for a few years, but i still enjoy hearing the bright sounds on recordings.
