A prayer of thanks.

David assigned a group of Levites to praise God. He gave them a sample of how to do it, the first sentences of which are here:

Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations what he has done.
Sing to him, sing praise to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts. (I Chronicles 16)

So that’s what I’ll do.

  • When I was feeling hopelessly confused last Monday and I was talking about it with You and suddenly I understood a better way to look at the situation, that was your work, God, that peace and insight.
  • When the train of thought about “why” took us to the perfect exercise in staff meeting, that was your work, God, that creative nudge.
  • When I write something because it just seems like the right thing to write and I find out that it was the right thing to read for someone on that day, that was your work, God.
  • When I hear myself saying, “I am such an idiot” and I finally stop long enough to remember that your voice doesn’t sound like that, and then I stop saying it and I remember some phrase about being loved with an everlasting love, that is your work, God, that hug and that history and that assurance.
  • When I forget to do something that I thought was crucial and everything still works fine, that is because I was thinking I was the one that mattered and forgetting that this is your work, God.
  • When I have enough energy to do exactly what has to be done, and no more, when I forget how to teach and the class still goes well because I have the words to say and can hear the hearts behind the questions, that is your work, God.
