Remembering why I write

I write 300 words a day about following Jesus because

  • I love having people say, “I never thought about it that way.” And I love that most when they say that about God and about his letters to us.
  • The Bible is a remarkable collection of commmunications and if I commit to talk about it, I have to keep reading it and studying it and listening to it and being amazed and rebuked by what I read.
  • I want to help myself and other people choose to follow Jesus or not for the right reason: because we understand what God is offering and expecting, rather than for the wrong reason: because no one ever bothered to listen and explain.
  • It’s one way I can teach people what it means to obey everything that Jesus commanded. (That’s also why I write about some of my own questions and struggles and practices, because one way to teach how to obey is to show how to obey).
  • I believe my invisible friend is real.

I publish a daily email of Bible readings called 7×7 for the same reasons, to help the people around me have a reminder to spend 7 minutes a day interacting with God.

And I’m starting a new project for the same reason. “A Great Work” is a weekly email about leading based on the book of Nehemiah and the story of Nehemiah. If you’ve been here for the past few months, you have noticed me talking about Nehemiah. His story provides a framework for me to understand what rebuilding walls and people looks like. I am stunned at how much I am seeing as I keep focusing on this one book. And I wanted a place to explore that without the 300 word constraint.

I just had to remind us why we’re here.

Jon, I appreciate the reminder. It’s hard to state all the benefits in a sentence – 300 Words is an essential part of my daily devotions, I love the perspective, the challenge the contemporary voice of timeless truth – it challenges me to live and move and have my being in God at the same time it’s helpful to walk with others trying to do the same thing.
I am in Europe for an extensive visit it feels like a life line of sorts –
    Gratefully
    Joe
