A prayer for the twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

God.

Solomon, when you invited him to ask for anything, asked for wisdom.

That was easy for him as a king with enough resources to offer a thousand sacrifices to you. If that was a tenth of his resources, he still had a lot left. If a tenth is 1000 animals, having 9000 left over would be pretty good.

But we don’t have big herds. We don’t have the luxury to ask for wisdom. We need healing. We need peace. We need the rent for this week.

Solomon, and Paul, aren’t talking about wisdom as stock tips or secret formulas. They are talking about wisdom as a way of life. Applying your principles to choices, seeking your heart for priorities, desiring your presence.

Solomon wanted a discerning heart, to see your way in the noise and the shouting. Paul wanted us to invest our time and attention in what matters, and to do it with gratitude.

It sounds wonderful to have a life that clear.

But we can’t see past the next minute, the next crisis, the next question.

Today, can we have moments of quiet so we can listen for you? Can we have moments of courage so we can act for you? Can we have moments of you so we can remember your love?

We ask, through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
