Anyway

Rich Dixon talks about what we could be doing.

I frequently chuckle at myself as I create these reflections.

It seems this journey has been about learning, then relearning, the simple principles Jesus explained to His disciples. And then trying to practice them.

Perhaps that shouldn’t be surprising. Perhaps that’s what following is about.

Last time I told you about meeting my friend Scott at a book signing, about rekindling his long-dormant dream of a round-the-world bike ride. Scott’s a scientist. He told me in intricate detail his plans for how the ride would happen.

Scott tells the story about how I listened to his plans, smiled, and gently suggested the ride likely wouldn’t happen according to his vision. I said following a God-inspired dream means you’ll get interrupted, and often the interruptions are the whole point of the journey.

That’s where I chuckle – I offer such wise guidance! And, after all these years, Becky still reminds me it’s about community, not routes and fundraising numbers. I know, but I get my nose stuck in the computer and start obsessing. Then Jesus nudges me. “Is this about loving your neighbor?”

Sometimes it is, because details and planning matter. But often it’s just another distraction, one more way to avoid the simple, challenging invitation to follow.

I want to be serious about asking myself, and encouraging you to ask yourself:

Do I really believe what I believe?

Let’s change directions. With an election approaching, it’s an especially charged time. Lots of emotions, division, angst. I suspect that’s not limited to the US.

Our friend Kristen Orphan graciously donated her recording of ANYWAY as the FREEDOM TOUR theme song. Each year I create a recap video using Kristen’s beautiful soundtrack.

Maybe a good time to watch some low-quality video from our first 3 years and let Kristen’s inspiring words penetrate the fog.

2016 FREEDOM TOUR

To be continued…

About the photo: Irene was surprised one morning to discover her spiffy road bike had been replaced by something less suited to the task.
