Eternal Consequences

Rich Dixon is thinking about the riding that happened last week.

Dick Foth honored us by speaking during lunch at last week’s FREEDOM TOUR CLASSIC.

Dick offered profound wisdom, as he always does, but one thing stood out. He said everything that happened – riding a bike, walking, handing out water, providing directions, setting up tents – every single action, big and small, would be used by Jesus in ways we would never understand.

He said everything we did had eternal consequences.

As Dick spoke, I looked around. 125 cyclists and 80 volunteers, laughing and enjoying themselves. I imagined Jesus standing there, celebrating with us. I imagined him visualizing the eternal impact of every single action and interaction.

It’s a great reminder. It’s not the big stuff, the people on the stage. It’s the everyday acts of kindness and generosity – greeting a neighbor, showing kindness toward someone who’s marginalized – Jesus seems intent on magnifying the actions we might take for granted.

I don’t often think of my actions in terms of eternal consequences. Maybe you don’t, either.

In Jesus’ kingdom – there are no unimportant behaviors.

A few days later, a friend called. He’s organized a week-long youth camp called Go Serve in which high school students from around the country come to Fort Collins to do service projects. He wondered if we needed any help unscrambling after the ride.

Well… everyone brought everything to our house and dumped it in our garage. Signs, totes, pop-up canopies, whatever you can imagine. So, yes, any assistance was welcomed.

On Thursday morning, a group of 5 amazing young people and 2 adults from Crown Point, Indiana showed up in our driveway. They lifted, sorted, and organized. When they left, there was even room for 2 cars!

But, the story continues…

Friday afternoon, the doorbell rang. Same group, this time with $100 to donate to the kids at the Home of Hope. They said they were touched by our story and wanted to be part of it.

Eternal consequences.
