On difficulty focusing on the first Monday in August

Hi.

You may be struggling to concentrate today. I am.

I want to offer you some reasons to not get upset about it.

  • I’ve been trying to read a book that others have found helpful. I finally searched the author’s information and found they are part of an organization that thinks and writes and teaches a way I’m not always comfortable with. I realized that I don’t have to read the whole book. There are no expectations that I must keep. I can learn a couple important concepts and walk away.
  • Years ago, I was having a terrible time reading my Bible. After considering spiritual and psychological possibilities, I eventually realized my eyes needed larger print. (I wrote about it long ago).
  • In the days and weeks (at least) after a death or other loss, the reorienting and the habit disruptions of grief make thinking difficult.
  • Currently, Facebook feeds me many articles about grieving people. It’s because, of course, I write about grieving people. But being constantly aware of the stories of people I don’t know and don’t need to care for creates unnecessary chaos in my heart. And my brain.
  • Brain chemistry.
  • Circumstances beyond your control.

In short, there are perfectly understandable reasons to feel disrupted. Other people can give you the 10 steps to get back on track, or 10 ways to take the next step.

I will let them. I wanted to acknowledge that some (or all) days it’s hard. Because some (or all) days that’s what we need first.

Courage.

Jon
